The fact of the matter is, my wife and kids absolutely LOVE animals, but they don't like cleaning up after them. To be fair, I don't like to clean the floors and furniture either, however somebody has to do it. :-)

​

And so the story goes like this. All my life I've tried to come up with better ways to do jobs that I hate. Always thinking "there must be a better way". I'm sure that's not unlike other people, but I'd say the problem is that I often end up spending more time trying to come up with a better way than it would have taken me to do it the job to begin with. Let's just say, I am stubborn and determined at the same time.

Let me share a quickish story with you. Back in 2014 when our kids were young and we had animals running around, I couldn't stand having to sweep into a dustpan as I felt it never really got the floor clean - like an endless loop of sweeping to get the big stuff, but essentially just push around the pet fur, dust, and small particles. A stick vacuum worked fine for the larger areas, but didn't do well in the corners and under the cabinets and appliances, etc. So I immediately went to work. I came up with some rough sketches for what I referred to as the "VacBroom" which combined the standard household broom and the vacuum. I didn't know any better, so I hired an "ideas' company that was supposed to help me out. Long story short, after their evaluation, they led me to believe my idea likely wouldn't work in a crowded market - claiming it wasn't differentiated enough from other products. Not knowing any better, I didn't proceed with the patent and I took their word for it, regretfully.

 

Several years later, my wife and I made breakfast one Saturday morning and prepared to watch the Shark Tank episode we had recorded from the night before - one of our favorite ways to kick off the weekend. I'll never forget, my wife was sitting down in the living room and I was adding some peanut butter and syrup to my pancakes. Side note: Apparently that's weird to some people who only use butter, so sorry if my choice of pancake fixings offends you in any way. :-) I wasn't really watching the TV yet, but I was listening and I heard them introduce the next product as a brand new invention combining the household broom and the vacuum cleaner. Then they introduced the "inventors", one of them literally being the guy from the local ideas company who I worked with directly - as a matter of fact, he's the one who signed the NDA. I nearly passed out. They did make some minor adjustments to my original design, but the idea undoubtedly came from my submission. To make matters worse, they went on to get a deal with Mr. Wonderful for their company, based on data from https://sharktankinsights.com, their business was valued at over 14M.

In the end, this was a tough pill to swallow, but I can safely say I had a multimillion dollar idea, even though I didn't reap the benefits of it.

​

All that being said, I am a believer in learning from past mistakes and I am determined to succeed and solve this problem for myself and hopefully for many others who are struggling with the same issues. I think that the aforementioned product does a subpar job solving the original problem for a multitude of reasons. Most folks I've talked to who purchased this product love the idea/concept, but they say the design leaves something to be desired. These are the problems I have set out to address, but this time with the help of a professional patent attorney and credible design and manufacturing companies.

 

So, instead of enforcing strict rules of keeping the pets off the couch, which the kids...and wife won't abide by anyway, I am focused on innovative cleaning solutions that make it easier for everyone.
